Let's Get Perilous

Layout Design

How might I create a community of queer people interested in reflective contemplation through an exploration of my
own spirituality?

Let's Get Perilous invites viewers to approach the mundane world with a magical eye. Spirituality can be a source of positivity and comfort for some, but for certain communities it has been stained by negative experiences or gatekept entirely. How can something so out of reach be made more accessible?

Through conducting a survey, literature review and self-ethnography, I identified three key findings that informed my design process:

  1. Interpretations of a Spirit: The queer experience is largely agnostic — an all-encompassing force runs through
    the universe.

  2. Formative, for Better and for Worse: Beauty can be found in God despite societal oppression... but negative influences can be hard to shake.

  3. Pop Theology: The divine is shaped according to personal need and runs wild through the imagination — reach out, touch faith.

My final deliverable took the form of a spiritual field guide. Let's Get Perilous presents the supernatural in rational terms — it makes no attempt to "prove" the existence of a higher power, but simply urges the reader to take note of small coincidences happening around them every day. At its simplest, what is spirituality other than probability and gratitude?
